Physical
Hunger is a two-edged sword: too few calories and too many calories. In North
America while possibly one-third of the population may suffer from not enough
calories, Almost twice that number is facing the consequences of too many
calories consumed.
Nutrition and activity/exercise issues are sharpening the devastation of both
blades. The Hunger Fighters Team is committed to preventing Hunger. There is
the immediate physical hunger which must be stopped immediately to arrest the
irreversible damage that could be experienced for a life time. Daily clicks to
donate free food to America's Second Harvest work there while working through
the longer term prevention measures which will focus on promoting triple bottom
line organizations (those which measure impact on people, profit, and planet)
and especially those which are helping empower people to participate in the
economic and social system as independent valued worthwhile participants who
are able to enhance their qualities of lives.
The too many calories consumed side of the sword cannot be ignored. A few
quotations from a Dec 14, 2001 AP article
"Surgeon General: Obesity may soon kill more Americans than Cigarettes". "Some 300,000 Americans a year die from illness caused or worsened by
obesity. Some 60 percent of adults are overweight or obese, as are nearly 13
percent of children. It's time for workers to get physical activity on the
job.healthier workers mean employers' insurance and absenteeism costs will
drop.reduce significantly the risk of getting diabetes or heart disease.by
simply walking 30 minutes a day."
The health impact of physical activity when understood, must be a part of the
Hungerfighters' message:
Lower death rates for adults
Lower risk of heart disease and diabetes
Help prevent and reduce high blood pressure
Increases muscle and bone strength
Increases lean muscle and decreases body fat
Aids in weight control/weight loss
Enhances psychological well being
Improves mood (from a proposal for
www.heartsnparks.org).
Thus we encourage our own Team members and visitors in the process of helping
prevent Hunger of others to enhance their own health and well being. That is
part of creating win-win situations in organizations by measuring their
successes by impact on people, planet, and profits (revenues, sales, grants,
donations)
